Liminality

Liminal adj. Relating to a threshold.

There is a librarian whose blog is called The Liminal Librarian and her definition of her state is:

Liminality, the state of being “in between,” is inherently unsettling, yet full of possibility. Liminal librarians are on the threshold, mindful of their in-betweenness, taking issue with absolutes, and excited about what the future may hold.

I have been thinking about liminality as a state of being lately. There are so many thresholds to cross…some are clear and some have salt scattered upon them and some don’t have anyone to ask you to come in.

Here is a list of things that are affected by my perception of a threshold that I need to cross:
my health
my job
at least one relationship where change is imminent
friendships
my spirituality
becoming “homo novis” (not like Spider was talking about in Stardance) or maybe it should be “homo connected”

The last is something I am thinking about because I am reading Everything is Miscellaneous.

Ambient Intimacy

David Wineburger, of Everything is Miscellaneous fame, talks about a talk by Leisa Rechelt which is posted by her at Reboot.

He quotes:

Ambient Intimacy is a term to describe that sense of connectedness that you get from participating in social tools online that allow you to feel as though you are maintaining and, perhaps in fact, increasing your closeness with people in your social network through the messages and content that you share online – be it photographs or text or information about upcoming travel.

There are lots of other terms that people have used to describe this kind of connected experience including Situational Awareness, Hyper-Connectivity, Hive Mind, Social Presence, Distributed Co-Presence etc. I still prefer Ambient Intimacy because it combined the human ‘ickyness’ of ‘intimacy’ with the distributed and non-directional nature of ‘ambiance’.

Great Bouncing Bast on a pogo stick!!! This describes almost my entire social circle.

BTW, I highly recommend Weinburger’s book and blog.

Neighbors

John Scalzi, bless him, pointed me to this post about Mr. Rogers. I have to admit, I didn’t really ever watch Mr. Rogers…not the right demographic (I was too old when he got onto tv and my kids were beyond the Mr. Rogers stage when I married them.) That’s too bad, because he sounds like my kind of man.
