Friday afternoon at the Library, or Structured Procrastination as an art form

http://education.guardian.co.uk/egweekly/story/0,,2079248,00.html Walt at Random pointed me to this delightful study regarding procrastination, so I thought I would share. After all, my goal for this afternoon is to clear off 1 cart of material that needs to be processed, clear the surface of my desk and water my plants. However, I just paused to take my 2 hours after lunch blood sugar (119 thank you very much) and every time I pause or take a break or answer the phone or a question I am obligated to check my email (although not to respond to it) and as long as I check my mail I may as well check Google Reader to see if anything new has come out in the 5-10 minutes since the last time I looked, and found this article, which talks about a study done by a philosopher by the name of John Perry.

I feel justified in presenting this information because, after all, libraries are repositories of information and because there are so many folks out there in the blogosphere who provide me with information that I, in turn, can disseminate to you all (even though you may have already read it). Besides, it’s a gorgeous (if slightly cool) Friday afternoon in May, there are maybe 10-15 people in the library, including staff, and I have to be here until 5pm.
